Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Why should I floss?

A: Without proper dental hygiene, you’re at risk of plaque collecting on your teeth. Too much plaque can lead to periodontal disease (gum disease). Signs of gum disease include bad breath, bleeding gums, loose teeth, gum inflammation, painful chewing, and receding gums. Regular flossing protects teeth from cavities and decay.

Q: How often should I floss?

A: The American Dental Association recommends flossing at least once per day.

Q: When should I floss?

A: Your daily flossing routine is at the discretion of your personal preference and schedule. Many people choose to floss at night to ensure a clean mouth before going to sleep.

Q: Is it better to floss before brushing?

A: Flossing releases and removes plaque, bacteria, and food waste from your teeth and gums. If you floss after brushing your teeth, these unwanted items will stay in your mouth until the next time you brush. For this reason, it’s recommended to first floss and then brush to make sure that all plaque and food is properly removed from your mouth.

Q: Is it expected to have some slack in my Platypus floss thread?

A: Yes, the Platypus flosser is designed to have some slack in its thread. When the spatula (thin) side of the flosser is flexed away from the thread during use, the thread will tighten and the slack will be removed.
